Volunteer Dawgs @ Atlanta Mission
submitted by Mary Barrett on April 22, 2011
The Volunteer Dawgs joined together to help a local thrift store get ready
for a new season of meeting needs. On April 16th, fourteen UGA MBA
students descended on Atlanta Mission's Athens based thrift store in
order to help clean, sort and prepare merchandise for display. It was
an awesome event and fun to help out an organization that is serving a
critical need in the community.
Atlanta Mission uses its thrift stores to meet community needs in
several ways. They provide low cost, gently used goods to help lower
income family have access to the stuff of life. The stores also provide
job training opportunities for individuals who are going through
Atlanta Mission's various recovery programs. Individuals who are
recovering from addictions and the different challenges affecting the
homeless have to opportunity to live on a farm in the rural Athens area
where they help sort materials for the thrift store and live while they
get back on their feet.
The store was managed by enthusiastic staff who believe in the mission
and it was a pleasure to work for them. As part of the project several
of the MBA students are also helping the thrift store with an integrated
marketing plan. Everything from in store merchandising techniques to
identifying target customer segments is fair game. It was a great day
and we look forward to working with Atlanta Mission again in the future.
