Community Garden
submitted by Mary Barrett on August 26, 2011
On August 9, twenty-five new MBA students bonded over a
several hours of hard work. The incoming class of 2013 got a taste of the
UGA's Volunteer Dawgs program when they got a chance to get dirty while serving
in a local community garden.
The Volunteer Dawgs program is designed to give students access and motivation
to local nonprofit organizations where they can serve in the charitable
work. For over fifteen years, the program has helped local nonprofit
organizations in a variety of ways. Many students use their previous work
skills and experience in more business related functions ranging from
developing marketing plans or working on compensation studies. Other
projects are more laborious and give students the chance to contribute some sweat
equity.
This week during orientation students participated in cleaning up a local
community garden and had a great chance to bond in the process. Students
raked, weeded, and cleaned up a large garden area; no small task in the August
heat! These projects build teamwork and relationships that will help future
class projects in the coming weeks. They also instill the value of giving
back to the community.
