DOCC Social Projects 2011-12
submitted by Abbasali Gabula on May 9, 2012
The Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC) was started by SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) in 1993. The objective was to encourage the students of the PGDM programme to undertake a six week social project in remote rural areas with an NGO & provide inputs from the viewpoint of a management student. Working as such in socially and economically disadvantaged sections sensitizes and exposes students to hardships and acknowledges the need for their contribution to the society. Over the last 18 years, SPJIMR students have carried out approximately 1400 DOCC projects in the areas of Women Empowerment, Health, Education, Environment, Social Entrepreneurship, Disaster Management, Microfinance, SHG, etc. The students have worked with more than 800 organisations like NGOs (which are nationally & internationally renowned) and government bodies. These projects help bring a synergy between the managerial inputs provided by the students & the grass root level implementation abilities of the NGOs. Apart from improving the efficiency of the NGO & providing visibility, it also provides the students with an experience of working in an unstructured environment thus helping them to understand the universality of management principles and their application in the social sector.
Following the tradition, even this year saw 166 students of the PGDM programme carry out 70 projects with 48 NGOs spread across the country. Details of few of the projects have been mentioned in the video uploaded on YouTube (link shared as part of the submission). As it has been every year, the feedback from both the students and the NGOs were nothing short of ‘excellent’.
